I'm having the same problem with my Samsung D600 which won't allow attachments of more than 200kB. Samsung say the "network providers" impose this limit so they have to implement it on the handset.

Tmobile deny there is any limit on attachment size. I believe them because I can take the sim card out of the Samsung phone and use it to send any size of attachment I like from my PDA or laptop. I've sent Samsung's reply to Tmobile for comment.

Same problem over here (Nokia 6280)

It totally sucks and agree with everything you've said.

I'm trialling some Java based clients as an alternative and will post back if i have any luck, so far though they all seem to fall short.

A good starting point would be here.

Having just finished with O2 (it just wasn't working out between us) I've never had any problems sending large photos from my phone via email. As far as I'm aware they don't have any limits below at least 400KB. I blame Nokia.

/me hugs my Samsung

Flickr have provided a good work-around to the problem, but it's still a ridiculous limitation on the phone handset (what if I wasn't using Flickr, but some other service which doesn't have that feature?). Is the same true of other brands of phone? Nokia provide no documentation of this in their handset specifications.

That's what flickr's replace this photo feature is for. Upload a smaller (and cheaper) file over MMS/email then replace it with the high res one when you get home. Best of both worlds...
